Mont d'Arbois: The Birthplace of Alpine Luxury
Perched on the hills above Megève, the chalets of Mont d’Arbois tell a unique story that began more than a century ago—a story of vision, heritage, and a mountain lifestyle passed down through the generations.
1920: The Birth of a Vision
The story begins in 1920, when Baroness Noémie de Rothschild discovered Megève, a mountain village still deeply rooted in its Alpine traditions.
Captivated by the beauty of the landscape and the proximity to Mont Blanc, she envisioned a winter destination that would combine the elegance of major European resorts with the authenticity of a Savoyard village.
His ambition: to make Megève a French alternative to St. Moritz, where the joys of the mountains go hand in hand with a true art of living.
This vision is gradually taking shape at Mont d’Arbois. In 1921, the Hôtel du Mont d’Arbois opened, followed in 1923 by France’s first mountain golf course.
More than just a destination, it is a certain vision of Alpine hospitality that is beginning to take shape.
Henry Jacques Le Même: Architecture in the Service of the Alpine Way of Life
A few years later, a single encounter would have a lasting impact on Megève’s architectural identity.
In 1925, the young architect Henry Jacques Le Même moved to the village. Noémie de Rothschild commissioned him to design a chalet inspired by traditional Savoyard farmhouses, while offering all the comforts of a contemporary home.
Completed in 1927, this project helped give rise to a new vision of mountain living: the “skier’s chalet.”
Wood and stone blend with more modern lines; the spaces are designed for comfort and a warm, welcoming atmosphere; and the architecture opens up to the surrounding landscape.
An innovative approach for its time, one that would have a lasting impact on the character of Megève and help shape the identity of Alpine luxury: a natural elegance deeply rooted in its surroundings.
1963: A New Chapter in the History of Mont d’Arbois
In 1963, Baron Edmond de Rothschild continued this story by acquiring what would become the Chalets du Mont d’Arbois.
That year, to mark the renovation of the Palace des Neiges, he organized the famous “100 Hours of Mont d’Arbois” festival, an event that marked a new milestone in Megève’s growing reputation.
Over the decades, the estate has continued to cultivate the art of hospitality, where family heritage meets the joys of mountain life.
Three cabins, one story
Today, this legacy lives on in the three chalets that make up Les Chalets du Mont d’Arbois: Noémie, Eve, and Alice.
Three first names, three identities, but a shared commitment to preserving the spirit of a family home.
Inside, natural materials, architectural details, and certain pieces from the private collection bear witness to this history, which continues to unfold.
Each space invites you to rediscover the charm of an Alpine home, with its understated elegance, warm atmosphere, and sense of being at home.
Alpine Luxury: A Living Heritage
More than a century after Noémie de Rothschild’s vision, the Mont d’Arbois retains its unique identity, where history, architecture, and the art of hospitality come together.
At Les Chalets du Mont d’Arbois, luxury is more than just decor. It’s found in the warmth of a living room, the character of a home, the attention to detail, and the pleasure of taking your time.
A certain vision of alpine luxury, born at Mont d’Arbois, is still alive today.
